Sarah currently lectures on writing and design in the Centre for Arts, Design and Information Technology at Toronto's George Brown College.

​She spent five years training online writers at Suite101.com, and is available for seminars  on writing and a range of cultural topics, including culinary and fashion history.

What's new?

  • Sarah's latest book, Jam, Jelly and Marmalade, A Global History, was released by Reaktion Books in 2021.
  • In December 2022, Sarah discussed the enduring appeal of traditional holiday foods on Peggy O'Neil's Food for the Future (Global's 980 CFPL) and spoke on CBC Radio's "Alberta at Noon" with Judy Aldous about lost snack foods.
  • In March 2022, Sarah presented an illustrated lecture titled "History in a Jar: jam, Jelly, Marmalade & the people who made it" as part of a series about food programmed at the library at Harper College in Palatine, Illinois.
  • Her previous book, We Sure Can! How Jams and Pickles are Reviving the Lure and Lore of Local Food, was shortlisted for Taste Canada—The Food Writing Awards in the category "Single-Subject Cookbooks".

  • Illustrated lectures offering an overview of Canadian food history, previously delivered to such institutions as the Art Gallery of Burlington, the Brockville Museum; the Canadian Federation of University Women; the Elgin and Area Heritage Society, and the Ontario Genealogical Society.
  • Historical talks about jam and marmalade, including a detailed look at the Shirriff food company, offered to the Brampton Historical Society; the Culinary Historians of Ann Arbor; the Culinary Historians of Canada; Parkwood National Historic Site, and the Riverdale Historical Society.

  • Animation of the historic kitchen and cooking for special events from early 1800s recipes at Montgomery's Inn community museum and Fort York National Historic Site.
